Photos I Didn't Take is an ongoing writing project in which I note down photos that could've been, but I did not take. The absent photos are a combination of intentional choice, being unable to, and simply missing the moment.

The writing takes shape in list form, stoically describing the frame or scene I would've taken. The project is self-soothing. It's a consolation that even though I missed the photo, I am able to document it in some other way.

The practice in writing down scenes has also led me to explore the role of street photography today. I admire the golden age of street photography, beautiful candids of people, Winogrand, Meyerowitz. But in the age of surveillance, digital footprint, and data privacy, I don't feel comfortable photographing strangers without their consent. With good reason. There are times that I kick myself for not doing so. I certainly romanticize the ability to capture the decisive moment. A painting in a picture.
